We’re avid followers of the website Hodinkee- it’s one of our favorite websites to visit when we want to read reviews of the latest and greatest watches. A few years ago, the site partnered with musician John Mayer to create a video discussing Mayer’s passion for collecting watches. The video gained traction and the site began producing more videos with avid timepiece collectors. Earlier this month, they brought Mayer back to create a new video that focuses on one of his favorite watch brands, a line we’re proud to offer in our Nashville salon, IWC.
Mayer explains that the IWC Big Pilot (reference 5002) was one of the first major watch purchases he ever made, and that the piece was his go-to watch on tour for many years.

The Pilot, which Mayer describes as “a tool watch” rather than “artful”, is a quintessential member of the IWC family. It has arguably remained one of the most easily identifiable models from the brand since it was first introduced in 1936; with it’s large crown, riveted strap, and aviation instrument-inspired dial, it certainly stands out on your wrist. Although IWC has traditionally been a masculine brand, with no ladies models offered, they’ve recently introduced the IWC Pilot’s Automatic 36, a smaller 36mm version of the Pilot watch that can easily be worn both by men and women.
Watch the video below to listen to Mayer’s insightful take on watch collecting and on his long-term relationship with IWC.
