Not all high-end Swiss timepieces come with a 5 digit price tag! With modern technology, shoppers can now oftentimes find a fine Swiss watch for less than $6,000, which means it’s easier than ever to start a luxury timepiece collection. We spoke with Mark, an associate in our Nashville store who has more than 35 years of jewelry and watch experience, to discuss how the watch industry has changed in the last few decades, and to see a few of his favorite watches under $6,000.
The Driver: TAG Heuer MonacoOf the three watches Mark talked to us about, the TAG Heuer Monaco (CAW2111.FC6183) certainly has the most distinctive look. The square case and blue strap make it stand out from the classic round case, black strap watches that most men gravitate towards in their first major watch purchase. This watch was featured in the classic Steve McQueen film, Le Mans, and it’s seen a few updates since that time. The modern TAG Heuer movement is far more accurate than it was 40 years ago, and the sapphire crystal covering the dial (which is scratch-resistant) is a big step up from the plastic covers of old.
The Diver: TUDOR Black Bay Steel & GoldTUDOR released the Black Bay Steel & Gold (M79733N-0002) at Basel this year and so far it’s been a huge hit. This marks the first time that the Black Bay has been available in steel and yellow gold. The Black Bay Steel & Gold is one of the only Black Bay timepieces which features a date function (along with the Black Bay Steel and the Black Bay Chronograph, also released at Basel this year.) The unidirectional rotating bezel and screw-down crown make it a true diver’s watch, and it’s water-resistant to 660 feet.
The Pilot’s Watch: IWC Pilot ChronographIWC, or International Watch Company, has consistently been a leader in Swiss-made sport watches. Their Pilot watches, as we’ve discussed in the past, are hugely popular among celebrities like John Travolta and John Mayer. With a chronograph function, day-date function, and Santoni leather strap all included in the $4,950 price tag, you’re definitely getting the most out of your money with the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph (IW377709).
